Sara L. Bixby has worked as Deputy Executive Director for IT, Administration and Finance for SWANA since 2013. Prior to that, she was a member of SWANA’s International Board for 11 years, including serving as president for the 2010 fiscal year, and advocating for the development of SWANA’s Young Professionals Initiative. Ms. Bixby worked more than 20 years in the solid waste industry, both as a solid waste management consultant, and as the director of a regional solid waste agency. While at the agency, Ms. Bixby chaired the Iowa Department of Natural Resources advisory council leading the development of environmental management system program parameters for use throughout the state. Since joining SWANA, Ms. Bixby has worked on creating better ties with other organizations, including working with the California Resource Recovery Association to develop a new Zero Waste Principles and Practices Certification Course. Ms. Bixby has a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in Mass Communications from Iowa State University.
