Environmental Justice and the Landfill Gas Energy Industry
Meeting Room 160

Environmental justice (EJ) is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. EPA offers numerous EJ resources to communities, state and local governments and Tribes to advance planning, learning and partnership.

EPA’s LMOP assists landfill owners and others with the development of landfill gas (LFG) energy projects through technical assistance, data sharing, informational materials and webinars, and partnership. In December 2022, LMOP added layers for EJ demographic data (EJSCREEN) and Tribal areas to its national map of landfills and projects. In Spring 2024, LMOP will publish a fact sheet outlining EJ considerations and actions related to LFG energy project development. At SOAR 2024, LMOP will discuss fact sheet content including how to communicate risks and benefits and consider historical concerns. We will also demonstrate how LMOP’s national map can be used by project developers and others to determine details about EJ areas in relation to landfills and potential energy projects.
