Concurrent Session: Digital Transformation Of Waste Management: Drones, Smart Forms, And GIS
Room A315/316 (GWCC)

Tetra Tech has developed an integrated technologies solution to enable map-centric data collection, analysis, visualization, and remote monitoring and control for various landfill systems. The solution is configured using ArcGIS Field Apps and drones to collect data and ArcGIS Enterprise to graphically display it using Dashboards, web maps, and mobile map applications.

The solution allows clients to easily control, track, manage, and report on their processes. By integrating GIS, the Tetra Tech solution not only allows clients to view and assess all field data collected but also allows us to integrate high-resolution aerial imagery. Digital elevation models, grading and stockpile volumes, greenhouse gas emission scans, and thermal infrared data that is collected by FAA licensed pilots using unmanned aerial systems, or “drones”. It allows authorized users to control their systems remotely, collect data, and use the data to enhance their productivity, reduce their operations and maintenance costs, and reduce their environmental risk.

Field data collection apps and dashboards have been configured for multiple landfills. The solution allows field technicians to collect data from various landfill systems including pneumatic pumps, blower/flare skids, compressors, migration probes, horizontal collectors, clean outs, groundwater wells, and other similar assets more quickly and accurately than a paper-based method. It automatically populates the data into an ArcGIS Dashboard that summarizes OM&M efforts and activity.

It's all about automating processes to more efficiently and accurately collect and manage comprehensive data. Data collection systems are automated and updated in real-time, thereby minimizing labor, increasing site productivity, and reducing the time it takes to analyze data. The collection and integration of GIS data represents a meticulous record of the condition of the site over time. Through the continual collection and archiving of data, our clients have a virtual representation, or “digital twin”, of their landfill at any time, from anywhere.
