Closed landfills present ideal opportunities for development of solar farms, transforming liabilities of closed landfills into long-term renewable energy assets. Recent data presented in Time magazine’s website indicated nearly 300 MW of landfill or brownfield solar projects have been created or are in development since 2015. This session will discuss the economics of development, including the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit that stabilizes the market through 2032, financial legislation seen in specific states, engineering best practices, permitting approaches, and operational and maintenance considerations for project success. In addition, the session will discuss the traditional solar solution for closed landfills, as well as a new, advanced solar solution that has been implemented in recent years to address some of the challenges faced by the traditional solution. Case histories of solar development on closed municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, coal combustion residuals (CCR) impoundments, and brownfields will be presented in this session.
