When purchasing new equipment or making decisions on program changes, it is important to have information on what is out at the curb or in the alley. With the City of Bismarck’s automated trash collection system, drivers stay in the vehicle and an automatic arm empties carts. Often, there are items outside of the cart, and with Bismarck’s “take all” program, drivers must exit the truck to properly service the customer. HDR utilized SURVEY123, an ARCGIS program to conduct surveys of materials inside and outside of the carts. Using the data from the Survey, HDR was able to make recommendations on truck, route, and disposal changes for the City in order to continue to improve their program.
