EPA identified over 20 leachate PFAS management technologies, but many are not yet practical. Reverse Osmosis works well, but residuals must be managed separately and approaches are detailed. Underground injection is used in Michigan and Texas for PFAS disposal. Activated carbon and ion exchange are limited to polishing steps. Upcoming technologies tested in the field include modified bentonite from Cetco (Fluoro Sorb) and other adsorbents from Mycelx/Oleology, foam fractionation, electrochemical oxidation, supercritical water oxidation (SCWO), and plasma. Residuals from these processes also must be managed. The session will identify and rank efficient and cost-effective treatment methods and perform a strength/weakness analysis based on pilot tests and full scale examples.
