Conversion of Biogas Power to Renewable Natural Gas – Flip or Flop
Kansas City Convention Center - Room 2103 AB

The value of biogas fired electric power (expressed in $/MWh) has declined because of competition from lower priced renewable power, more specifically, wind power and solar power. Renewable natural gas (RNG), an alternative product of biogas, is a much more valuable product (expressed in $/MMBtu). RNG plants cost more to construct and operate; however, overall economics strongly favors production of RNG over electric power.

Opportunities exist to convert or augment biogas electric power projects, including:

  • Where power purchase agreements are expiring
  • Where power purchase agreement can be cancelled or negotiated away (in whole or in part)
  • Where excess biogas exists, but has not been utilized because of low power purchase rates

This biogas can be used as an additive to biogas that is freed under the above opportunity scenarios.

The presentation will focus on three key issues:

  1. Historic, current and future prices for RNG
  2. Technologies available for production of RNG
  3. Cost of RNG production (capital and operation/maintenance costs)
