The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA), and the National Stewardship Action Council (NSAC) are proud to present a three-part webinar series focused on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and policy solutions for hazardous and hard-to-manage products.

From household hazardous waste (HHW) to battery fires and unregulated product disposal, our industry faces growing challenges that demand proactive solutions. This series will feature experts discussing successful EPR programs, recent and upcoming legislation, and strategies to reduce risks and costs associated with hazardous waste management. Whether you're a policymaker, waste industry professional, or sustainability advocate, these webinars will equip you with the knowledge and tools to drive meaningful change.

Join us to explore what’s working, what’s next, and how we can stop hazardous products from entering the market without an end-of-life plan.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Products that Cause Fires: Batteries, Compressed Gas Tanks, Marine Flares & More

Our industry has seen a tremendous increase in fires and explosions at our facilities in the last 10 years, so much so that insurance is getting extremely costly and hard to find. Our industry is 4th most dangerous in the country in part because of the dangerous products that are being thrown in the trash and recycling and disposal bans are not working. The situation is only getting worse, and the trajectory will not change unless we make significant changes and what should those be. Our goal is to share the data on the problem and the policy tools you have available to reduce the risk of fire and injuries to your staff.

Call to Action: Use the policy tools provided to start discussions with legislators and other key stakeholders regarding legislative solutions to keep workers safe

How Do We Turn Off the Tap: Ending the Sale of Hazardous Products with No End-of-Life Plan

In the US, products are brought to market without any consideration for how they must be handled at the end of its useful life. And now, an increasing proportion of products sold are considered hazardous, leading to costly end-of-life (EOL) management systems and increased exposure to workers from the dangers of improper disposal. We must change our hazardous product management system from one that is reactive to proactive and stem the tide of new products entering the marketplace without EOL plans.

Key Takeaway:
Understand that upstream solutions will always be more successful at preventing pollution, reducing hazards, and keeping costs down

Call to Action: Advocate for upstream solutions including requiring EOL management plans
