To address concerns from the public and better inform decisions regarding waste disposal, public utilities and municipalities are seeking approaches to assess the environmental, social, and economic triple bottom line (TBL) impacts that waste hauling and disposal has on their local community and global society. These sustainability assessment approaches need to align with multiple stakeholder values, regional zero waste initiatives, and applicable policies.
The session is formatted as a breakout session for participants to walk through each TBL component of waste disposal and hauling scenarios based on a mock case study. Group breakout sessions will be conducted for attendees to gain an understanding of available TBL assessment criteria and tools and experience in selection and prioritization of criteria to inform overall sustainability of a project or planning scenario. The session will close with a light discussion on lessons learned and opportunities for improvement.
