Tours & Experiences: Millbury Waste to Energy and Shrewsbury Monofill Tours

This is a two-in-one tour.

WIN Waste Millbury Waste to Energy (WtE) facility

two views of the Millbury Waste to Energy facility

Designed, constructed, owned and operated by WIN Waste Innovations since 1987, with a Commercial Operation Date (COD) of September 21, 1987. WIN Waste Millbury Waste to Energy(WtE) facility is capable of processing 1,500 tons of municipal solid waste each day into as much as 47.6 MW (gross)/40 MW (net) of electricity — enough clean energy to power 47,000 homes in the Town of Millbury and surrounding Central Massachusetts communities, as well as its own operations. The tour will take you through the processes of refuse receiving, combustion and energy production that is typical in any waste to energy facility.

Shrewsbury Monofill

view of the Shrewsbury Monofill

The nearby Shrewsbury Monofill was developed by WIN Waste Innovations in the 1980’s as a centralized disposal location for ash residue generated by several waste-to-energy plants located throughout the region. The 1,200+ ton per day monofill features an advanced ash processing system through a partnership with Blue Phoenix Inashco USA to remove recyclable ferrous and non-ferrous metals – down to particle sizes of less than 2 mm – from the ash being received. A capped area of the site includes a 12-acre solar field, complete with a grazing sheep flock for vegetation management.

Please note there will be a $10 nonrefundable registration fee. Boxed lunches will be provide on the bus ride back to the convention center. This experience is capped at 28, so register soon!
