Impacts of PFAS Regulations on Leachate Management: An Australian Perspective

The application of NEMP guidelines has caused consternation within the waste industry. Landfills are being impacted differently either by direct changes to their permits or indirectly by changes to wastewater treatment plant permits. This has had a flow-on effect on landfills. The impacts include a significant increase in the haulage of leachate to primarily private operating facilities, leading to significant increase in cost.

Regulatory pressure in the state of Queensland has driven several innovations in PFAS mitigation. Some of these technologies include foam fractionation to remove PFAS, on-site vaporization to retain PFAS within the landfill, and destruction techniques. This session explores testing for PFAS in landfill leachate in response to developing regulations.

After attending this session, participants will be able to: …

  • Analyze how evolving PFAS regulations have affected leachate management in Australia.

  • Foresee the regulatory changes that will require you to be proactive in your relationships with regulators.

  • Employ alternative leachate management approaches that may be required to comply with future PFAS regulations.
