San Antonio, TX has developed two career progression plans to mitigate staffing shortages that have plagued many solid waste departments across the country, specifically targeting truck drivers and mechanics. In the first case, apprentices can obtain a driving job without needing to complete a separate interview after completion of the program. The program also bypasses the typical licensing program’s delays and enjoys higher retention rates. In the second case, mechanics are offered reclassification yearly exams that allow them to move up a level and also receive a pay raise, encouraging career progression.
