The State of Recycling in America: How Well-Designed Policy Can Help Build a Circular Economy

Eight of 10 Americans believe in the positive impact of recycling. However, this excitement also brings many challenges. Today’s under-invested and aging recycling system fails to meet the recycling demands and provide robust streams of recycled materials for domestic supply chains. As a result, only 21% of US residential recyclables are captured, with every material being under-recycled, and 79% of materials that could be recycled ending up in the trash.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Build public trust in recycling through investment in communication, outreach, and support to help increase recycling participation.

  • Address low recycling rates, which represent a massive missed economic opportunity.

  • Analyze policies that support recycling gaps.
