Organics Diversion: How is California Doing?
California’s Short Lived Climate Pollutants Act (SB 1383) went into effect in 2020 with a goal of reducing organics disposal by 75% in 2025 and recovering 20% of edible food that same year. Presented by Zoe Heller, Director of CalRecycle, and Michelle Leonard, Senior Vice President of SCS Engineers, this presentation provides an update on how the State is doing on its aggressive goals after almost five years of implementation as it strives to inspire and challenge all of us to achieve higher levels of waste reduction, recycling, and reuse.
After attending this session, participants will be able to:
- Relate requirements of SB 1383 and how jurisdictions are attempting to meet them.
- Identify similar opportunities in their communities for the diversion of organics from landfills, including policies, programs, and infrastructure.
- Establish edible food recovery efforts within their own community/company.
