WASTECON Opening Session - Safety in the Skies and on the Ground: Aviation Industry Insights for Solid Waste and Resource Management

Safety is a top priority in waste and resource management, and there is much to learn from other industries that have prioritized a culture of safety to make notable improvements. Air travel is one of those industries. K. Scott Griffith, former Chief Safety Officer at American Airlines, will share his experiences and insights on safety. Widely recognized as the architect of the airline industry’s landmark Aviation Safety Action Programs, Griffith draws on his extensive experience in one of the world’s most regulated, high-consequence industries, where he was responsible for the safety of millions of passengers.

Griffith will explore the critical intersections of safety management between two vastly different sectors—aviation and solid waste and resource management in a conversation with Lynsey K. Baer, Chief of Engineering at the Delaware Solid Waste Authority. Griffith and Baer will discuss strategies and best practices from aviation that can be directly applied to our industry. From proactive risk mitigation to fostering a culture of safety accountability, he will demonstrate how principles such as incident reporting, safety audits, and data-driven decision-making can be adapted to address the unique challenges our industry faces.
