This session provides valuable insight into California’s jurisdictional program implementation that includes negotiating, enhancing, and/or expanding programs to facilitate compliance across the state. This discussion covers a wide range of implementation considerations such as: voluntary vs. mandatory policy, scope of generators included in the program, infrastructure issues, collection operations considerations, education and outreach, enforcement, funding strategies, and issues surrounding edible food recovery. Special attention will be given to the issues of extended producer responsibility, zero emission vehicles, new technology, and organics management. This presentation is specifically intended for audiences outside of California to help them understand how they can take successful portions of California’s model without being constrained by California’s particular laws.
After attending this session, participants will be able to:
-
Discuss ways extended producer responsibility bills may affect the industry as a whole.
-
Employ technologies available for the industry and recognize how emerging technologies may affect the industry.
-
Integrate lessons learned from implementing California's Organics and Recycling Policy (SB 1383) into developing new community programs to increase diversion and steer edible food recovery to feeding organizations.
